Workforce Development

Workforce Development: Investing in People, Changing Lives

At the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, we believe in second chances—and in the power of skill-building to open doors for a better future. That’s why we’ve launched a Workforce Development Initiative to equip inmates with the tools, education, and certifications they need to thrive—both while working with us and after release.

A 25+ Year Partnership with Purpose

For over two decades, HAFB has partnered with local correctional facilities to provide incarcerated individuals with meaningful work experience in our warehouse. Now, we’re taking that commitment further by integrating education and certification opportunities into the inmate work experience—ensuring they don’t have to choose between earning income and advancing their future.

Program Highlights:

  • Inmates gain hands-on experience in warehouse operations while earning credentials in high-demand fields.
  • Training and certifications are coordinated in partnership with ISTC and supported by DOC oversight.
  • Participants are paid for training time and receive incentive stipends for completed certifications.
  • Graduates receive job coaching, letters of recommendation, and may be eligible for ongoing support or permanent placement.

Priority Certifications Include:

  • Alabama Career Essentials (ACE)

  • CDL (Class A and B)

  • Forklift Operation

  • OSHA10

  • EPA 608 and 609

  • ServSafe

  • Certified Logistics Assistant (CLA)

  • Certified Logistics Technician (CLT)

The Impact

This program doesn’t just prepare inmates for employment—it reduces recidivism, promotes dignity, and creates a workforce ready to contribute. It’s a win-win for our food bank, our community, and the individuals we serve and support.
