Think outside the cereal box this Hunger Action Month!
A few boxes of cereal. A little creativity. And a whole lot of bragging rights!
This September, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank and WAKA Action 8 News are challenging Central Alabama to stack up some good with the Breakfast Stack Challenge!
Rally your coworkers, classmates, congregation, civic group, or crew. Collect shelf-stable breakfast foods. Then turn your collection into something worth showing off!
Build a skyline. Stack your mascot. Recreate a landmark. Show off your school spirit. Publicly challenge another business or friend. Keep it simple or go big. The creativity is up to you!
Then snap a photo, submit your creation, and see how your team stacks up!
Ready to take the challenge?
How It Works
- Rally & Register: Gather your team and get in the game! Businesses, schools, churches, civic groups, families, and friends are all welcome.
- Collect for a Cause: Collect shelf-stable breakfast foods such as cereal, oatmeal, grits, pancake mix, breakfast bars, and other favorites. The more you collect, the more you have to build with and the more you have to give!
- Stack It High: Now the fun part! Turn your collection into something creative! Build a mascot. Recreate a landmark. Spell out your company name. Or surprise us with something completely different. Go big. Get creative. Make it yours! Just make sure all food and packaging stay unopened, undamaged, and ready to donate.
- Show It Off: Snap a photo of your finished creation and upload it via the provided link you will be sent to be featured on WAKA.com and enter the competition! Your build will be up for awards, including the People’s Choice Award, and your team may even be featured on WAKA Action 8 News!
- Feed Hope: When the stacks come down, the real impact begins. All the breakfast foods collected through the challenge will be donated to the Heart of Alabama Food Bank to help provide food for neighbors facing hunger.
Award Categories Include:
- People’s Choice Award
- Best School Entry
- Best Small Business
- Best Large Business
- Most Pounds of Food Collected
The stacks get attention. What happens next is what really matters.
Vote for Your Favorite: Don’t want to build? You can still get in on the fun!
Once the entries are in, visit WAKA.com to see the creations and vote for the People’s Choice Award!
Those who vote will also be entered for a chance to win a $200 Piggly Wiggly Food for Less gift card!
Why It Matters!
September is Hunger Action Month, a time to turn awareness into action.
Approximately 1 in 6 people and 1 in 4 children in the area served by HAFB face hunger.
HAFB directly serves 12 counties across Central Alabama through a network of around 200 partner agencies, including food pantries and direct-service programs. Supporting four affiliate food banks around the state, HAFB extends our reach into 35 of Alabama’s 67 counties with over 500 partner agencies feeding hope around Alabama.
The Breakfast Stack Challenge gives our community a simple way to help.
You don’t have to solve hunger by yourself. Start with a box of cereal, add a few friends or coworkers, and see what happens when a community comes together.
Want to Do Even More?
The Breakfast Stack Challenge is focused on collecting food, but there is more than one way to help fight hunger.
Monetary gifts are also welcome. Every $1 donated to HAFB can help provide 5 meals for neighbors facing hunger.
Before you build, keep these basics in mind:
-Register your team before participating.
-Collect unopened, shelf-stable breakfast foods.
-Keep all food and packaging intact and ready to donate.
-Do not glue, staple, puncture, or damage food packaging.
-Take a clear photo before taking down your creation.
-Submit your entry by the campaign deadline.
-Follow HAFB instructions for donating your collected food.
-HAFB does not provide collection barrels.
-Review the Official Challenge Rules for complete eligibility, judging, voting, and submission requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Does everything have to be cereal?
No! We’re collecting shelf-stable breakfast foods, including cereal, oatmeal, grits, pancake mix, breakfast bars, and other breakfast favorites.
Does our build have to be elaborate?
Not at all. A creative stack counts! Have fun and do what works for your team.
Can we challenge another group?
Absolutely. Calling out another business, school, church, or organization is a fun way to spread the challenge, but it isn’t required.
What happens to our food?
After your entry is submitted, the food will be donated to HAFB to help serve neighbors facing hunger. Follow the campaign instructions to coordinate delivery.
Can we give money instead?
Yes. Food collection is the focus of the Breakfast Stack Challenge, but financial gifts are always welcome. Every $1 donated can help provide 5 meals. Donate Here!
