About the Heart of Alabama Food Bank

Since 1986, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank (HAFB) has been working to ensure that no one in our region goes hungry. Established through the leadership of the United Way Community Council and the American Red Cross, HAFB became a certified affiliate of Feeding America in 1989, joining a nationwide network committed to fighting hunger.

Our Mission:  To source, acquire, and distribute nutritious food to those experiencing hunger and food insecurity throughout our region, so that families, seniors, and children can thrive.

We take a strategic, two-pronged approach to addressing food insecurity:

In our 12-county direct service area, we partner with more than 200 local agencies—including food pantries, shelters, and community kitchens—to provide food and support to those facing hunger.

We also support four Affiliated Food Banks located in Auburn, Dothan, Selma, and Tuscaloosa, which extend our reach to an additional 23 counties across the state.

Together, our network includes over 800 hunger-relief agencies, covering more than 25,000 square miles across Central Alabama. Through collaboration, compassion, and community-driven solutions, we are working every day to ensure our neighbors have the nourishment and support they need to thrive.

Our Values

Food Bank vs Food Pantry

A food bank and a food pantry are both organizations that aim to help people who are experiencing food insecurity, but they have different functions and roles in the process of providing food assistance. Food banks act as centralized collection and distribution centers that serve multiple food pantries and community organizations, whereas food pantries are local outlets that directly serve individuals and families in need.

Both play a vital role in alleviating hunger and food insecurity in our community, with food banks being the arbitrator to efficiently managing food resources and food pantries providing direct support to those who require immediate assistance; both ensure that no one must battle hunger alone.

Food Banks and food pantries are not the same, but they are partners that share the same commitment: helping to fight hunger!
